The programme “InSOStenibles”, hosted by Montse Poblet on Catalunya Informació (3Cat), addresses the challenges facing Catalonia’s housing stock in the context of the climate emergency. In the interview with David Lladó, particular attention is given to the fact that nearly 60% of existing dwellings were built more than forty years ago, at a time when there were no regulatory requirements for thermal insulation or energy efficiency standards.
The programme examines how this construction deficit becomes especially critical in a context of steadily rising temperatures, increasing the risk of indoor overheating, energy poverty, and higher demand for cooling systems. It highlights the urgent need to promote energy retrofitting strategies, improvements to the building envelope, and adaptation of the existing housing stock to ensure comfort, health, and sustainability in an increasingly demanding climate scenario.
